detail, plus any planned subjects of research, study or project in US.
Describe the practical applications of current and planned research or
study. Assume that you are describing your work to a qalified
scientist/professional in your field.

My undergraduate project dealt with Dissertation of "Synthesis of
Styrene-Maleicanhydride copolymer". StyreneMaleicanhydride (SMA) was
synthesised by free radical polymerisation using toulene as the
solvent and benzoylperoxide as the intiator. once the polymer was
obtained it was washed with hot water toremove unreacted
maleicanhydride. then the product was dried and its structure was
elucidated with the help of Infrared Spectroscopy(IR) and Nuclear
Magnetic Resonance(NMR). SMA is used as a compatiblizer in polymer
blends to improve the morphology and mechanical properties.

My masters thesis title is "Modification of high performance
Thermosetting resins using Bismaleimides" My work delat with the
modification of eposy resins to improve its mechanical and thermal
properties. Bismaleimdie has good thermal and mechanical properties
but its very brittle. so when blended with epoxy it imparts its
excellent mechanical and thermal properties to the final product. The
mechanical properties were tested using Universal Tensile testing
Machine (UTM) and thermal properties using Differential Scanning
Calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The morphology is
studied using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). this product can be
used in civil industries and in adhesives.

I am Interested in pursuing my research in Polymer Chemistry with
emphasise in polymer synthesis and processing at University of
Massachusetts Amherst. I am given six months from sep 2003 by the
university to decide my research advisor and research area. so i will
finalise and decide the specific research area in consultation with my
research advisor.

10. Provide contact information for and subjects of any meetings
scheduled in the US.

11. Your organisation's golas and objectives pertaining to your visit
to the US.

12. Sponsoring Institutions ( US or Indian) funding your travel,
research or education.

I have got full aid from University of Massachusetts, Amherst (35292$)
which covers all tution fees of 17600$ and living expenses of 10800$.

13. Plans after comlpetion of study/ work (i.e. where will you

As i am interested in teaching and academic research i will come back
to india and join an academic Institution like Indian institute of technology, university institure of technology, mumbai and etc. As
India needs more acadamicians in the near future to cater the needs of
education i will have ample oppurtunities once i return back to india
after completing my doctorate degree.

14. Export License number (or if pending - Export License Application

Thats more than plenty, SriSiva. Looks well. Shouldn't have any problems.

Good luck to your brother. :b: BTW, UM Amherest is a great school, especially for polymer chemistry. Terrific place to go to... :D :D

Did u say that his Visa got rejected and they took his passport too. If they rejected his visa they have no business to do with his passport and should have returned it right at the interview.

Or is it that at the interview they had further queries and sent him an email in which case u will have to contact the consulate and verify proceedings.

My friend has had a similar problem sometime ago... but not sure if it is the same with you... maybe if I had more clarifications..

During the interview they asked the usual questions and they asked to fill up the answers for the following questions and send it by email.

Nah.. they probably wanted some more info.. these days they keep asking more and more info which is of less and less use, and totally unconnected or understandable to the goons at the consulate..

Like those suits know what the heck is ""Synthesis of
Styrene-Maleicanhydride copolymer". StyreneMaleicanhydride (SMA) was
synthesised by free radical polymerisation using toulene as the
solvent and benzoylperoxide as the intiator. "

:P :P :P

They have retained his Visa is what Sri says... To do some background checking and add more papers to his files, they usually need like a few weeks these days. In general its random checking. (some times some key words may prompt it too, but who knows.. :?)..

If they are still holding your brother's passport and papers its a good sign. He should get his Visa although it may take from a week to ..... How long God only knows. They may hold it for various reasons but not limited to just name check or some background checking. He will get it eventually. Ask him not to worry and enjoy his time in India...

Check out the forums at immigration.com or murthy.com for more details on holding your passport under 221g.

strange US visa regulations.. :Ksp: :Ksp: :Ksp: :Ksp: :Ksp: :Ksp:

I don't know whether this is general, but 1/2 people I know took a long time to get the visa for polymer sciences related study, one was from Chemical and other was Mechanical(not sure of the second though) but it took about 6 months for one of them to get a visa, the other got rejected I suppose. These are the only 2 incidences I've heard so am not sure if all the guys heading for this specific area are having this problem.

Even though he has a full funding, he still needs to show some financial support right  Though I guess the amount is pretty small (in any case, don't show too much from what's required. one of my friends showed 18 lakhs when people showed 10 lakhs around and got through).

But isnt the advisor contact specific to the department  isnt the SEVIS coordinator :Ksp: But how far this helps mein have no idea. If he had a specific research advisor, he could actually get a recommendation letter addressed to the visa officer. Usually these letters are very valued, am not sure how fast it would be for this specific area, but in general such a recommendation there would'nt be much questions.

The counsulate is pretty random in rejecting too especially Chennai, which is the busiest(processing the most (especially F1) visas) US counsulate in the world.

Good luck to your brother :b:, Siva, hope he gets through :D
