View Full Version : Beta versions

There are 3 popular products on restricted beta: Yahoo mail beta, Hotmail beta(Live mail), MSN 8(Windows Live Messenger Beta).

I happened to get my hand on 2 of these: Live Mail and Live Messenger.

Live Mail: Pretty decent, intial loading time is defenitely more than the previous version. One great improvement is key shortcuts. Works only with IE, although it displays the messages in Opera as well as Firefox, you cant use keyboard shortcuts in other browsers.

Remember tinker had a workaround posted in RT. Did anyone try it recently? I tried for one other friend's account(here is not in the US). The workaround does'nt seem to work. Also does'nt show up in Ideas Live (http://ideas.live.com) page.

Live Messenger: Hardly tried for 2-3 days. Finally offline messaging is here. Right now is invitation based. Coupla' members Neowin.net and Bigblueball.com have some invites to share. Worst part is I cant install on a Win 2k machine. Requires Win Xp+

I still have'nt got my hands on Yahoo mail beta. But heard from reviews that its really slow compared to the present version. Am pretty satisfied with the current version, this (http://junmakino.fastmail.fm/ymshortcuts.html) greasemonkey script has helped me a lot :D.

You are talking about this extension (http://viamatic.com/firefox/upgrade.html). That'll just add a drill-down to your message list so that you can read the message from the message list itself. Will be useful if you are primarily a text mail user.If it is primarily attachments, this wont be of much use. Keyboard Shortcuts in this Viamatic plugin does'nt seem to work for some strange reason.
Unlimited net? :ee: If so whats your provider? ;)

me too me too :ee:

Just want to get a feel, how Yahoo's done their Mail Beta.

30gigs is one hyped up service. absolutely no features apart from 30GB capacity. It takes ages to load a single page of theirs. Worst part is they have ads from Yahoo
Lot of work, and little time :( en seiven :Ksp:

I've been using Windows Live Messenger for a while now and I'm not that impressed. Offline messaging - "woohoo". :-\ That one was long overdue. Plus I don't really like the interface. It looks very ugly.

Did anyone try IE7 (its out on public beta now). First thing I noted was, its using more memory than Firefox. 2 tabs in IE7 take 52MB, same thing in Firefox is at 23 MB. Other than that, so far so good.

Nana, I've been using this site for quite a while now. It has some very interesting beta products.

I got Yahoo Mail Beta today, off late I havent deleted a single mail and accumulated about 700 odd unread emails and I get invited to beta. A friend of mine had a similar count of unread messages in his Inbox(about 900) when he got invited to BETA.

appadiyaa??
onnu try pannavaaa?? :ee:

03-31-2006, 05:29 PM
onnu try pannavaaa?

Yeah just give it a try(subscribe to some high volume groups in one of your yahoo accounts, clear them all when you get beta). Actually its just a coincidence I noted with one other friend who got invited to Beta. I guess few people got Beta the last few days (via Y-mail groups (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/y-mail/))

Yahoo Messenger 7.5 has come out with a public beta (atleast in US/Canada it just came recently), they have an incredibly stupid addon called Yahoo Central, and guess what it does: sets you default browser, email client and updates your Yahoo software :ahha: stupidestest thing is it is installed by default  inspite of me unchecking all other custom install options :?
Yahoo Mail BETA spikes CPU usage whenever it refreshes folder :Ksp: and that sucks seriously, Firefox process space was at 165 MB after using Y! Mail BETA.
Anyone using Gaim? Try the new 2.0 beta series. Am running 2.00 beta 1, its been connected non stop for the last 3 days, stealth settings have been included as a part of Gaim's Yahoo protocol.

04-05-2006, 04:02 PM
I used to use Gaim in my early college years.

As for Yahoo, I've never used any of their products from what I can remember.

04-07-2006, 01:35 AM
me using gaim :sm04: :sm04:
i tried beta 1, havent tried beta 3 yet. stelath is kind of weird naa? like there isnt an option to "sign in as invisible" BEFORE signing in..(or is there). Another is send IM to all. :ee:
i'm sure gaim2 will be my only client.

I am a beta-tester for a number of very cool products, one of which is Joost (http://www.wired.com/news/wiredmag/0,72506-0.html?tw=rss.index). Very neat so far.
