CHENNAI: A spectacular meteor shower is expected to take place on September 1. “Known as Aurigids, it is actually the debris left behind by the comet Kiess, which was last seen in 1911,” says P. Iyamperumal, Executive Director of B.M. Birla Planetarium in the city.

Meteors or shooting stars are pieces of space debris that enter the Earth’s atmosphere. As they arrive at speeds between 10 and 75 km a second they vaporise by air friction in a white-hot streak.
The showers occur when the Earth passes through the orbit of a comet, and this happens with regularity.
The best place to observe meteors is in an open area. A dark and cloudless sky improves the ambience. There is no need to use binoculars or telescopes as they can seen with the naked eye.
According to Mr. Iyamperumal, during the early part of the night the number of meteors visible will be less. As the night progresses the number of visible meteors will increase. “The best time to look is between about 3 a.m. and dawn,” he said. Then the sky will be pointing directly towards the meteoroid debris stream.

Meteor shower is the last scene in "Walking With Dinosaurs" documentary. Awesome it was, unfortunately, it killed all the dinosaurs. :(

No puraa... Meteors are highly local events - because it happens very close to earth.. (just at the top of atmosphere). So earth's own curvature would block out our seeing the stuff..

Besides, when it happens it will be 3.00 pm, and 110 Deg in good old canada.. :)

On the other hand meteors are far more common than other astro pheonomena.. so you might get a chance to see it pretty soon.. :)
