i just typed a very good response but it's all gone - my session expired!!
so i am not going to retype the whole thing, but the points:

i am a power user and having tried many distros - liked going back to Redhat (fedora)

it doesn't matter what distro u choose, u should have a good hardware. gone are those days where u can run linux on a PII (no i am not talking about DSL or Knoppix like distro's)

get a decent system with a good video card if u plan on running GUI (windows like). Also know this - webcam, audio, wifi either works or gives u all kind of problems. Installing linux is easy - just like windows, point and click, however configuring to what u want or installing ur favorite apps is a little pain if u don't know what an installer is or how to unzip a .tar.gz. Lot of ppl say, linux is easy, yes , it is easy but u have to have 6 months of prior experience to do some thing or atleast someone to show u how to do things.
Also choose whatever distro u please but stick to it for atleast 1 year, then u can jump around.

for everything else there is always "www.howtoforge.com" and "tldp"
