But I think women wearing metti was explained to me by my mom without any scientific backing. But you dont talk science with your mom, right? She is beyond all scientific explanations.

She said, a guy should look at any woman at her feet with respect and talk. If he sees a metti, that means she is married. Thaali is normally worn in the neck and it not pleasant to have some one looking there to figure out.

Cheers

Guku,

The posts dont expire and will be sitting pretty for some time. Even if they disapper, we have a very great memory :D :D, to make guys/girls put their foot in the mouth. It is always fun to see a human being with his/her foot in the mouth.

So, avuthu vidunga, enna matter?

Guruji, once pattams decides the outcome os thali debate, I dont care what comes next. Then, I can take a completly different take here (for the fun of it) and debate for metti and even thali ;)

If I do it now, its like I debate against myself. I will wait until thali dust settle down :) I will visit metti late. However, I want to take sides now itself :)

Why does there have to be a reason behind it all?
Why can't it be just because it looks pretty on there feet?....by the way methi is the toe ring right?...just to make sure ...don't want to put my foot in it.
yeah I know...terribly shallow.....

And to be frank I agree there is no sound logical reason behind wearing mangalyam or methi.......ppl can't see ur toes/feet ....and looking at a woman's neck or chest is very rude

Anainar,

I am confused here coz from the books i read and what my balu unle said..i thought its the otherway around.

METTI FOR MEN - OLDEN DAYS, WOMENT LOOK DOWN AND WALK, SO IF SHE SEES A GUY WITH METTI, THEN SHE KNOWS THAT HE IS MARRIED. SO SHE WILL NOT THINK DIFF.

THAALI FOR WOMEN - GUYS LOOK STARIGHT AND WALK. IF A GUY SEE A GIRL WEARING THAALI, THEN HE GETS TO KNOW THAT SHE IS MARRIED.

But even I am not sure about how women wear both thaali and metti ;)

Good point guruve.

Pattams, please make the topic clear. I took the metti side thinking it is for guys. And, I am going to argue that it is mandatory for guys to wear those all the time.

If you meant metti for ladies, I may have to reevaluate my decision again :)

Thanks, PAttams.

In my view guys should wear metti for atleast one of the following reasons:

1. It has a sceintific meaning to it. Our metti finger improves sexual potency.
2. Our ancestors are not fools to do this this long. If its a bad practise, it would have died down like sati. Metti (like thali) is for a disciplined life and without those, we will go back to the barbaric way of life (stone age).
3. Hey, ladies are wearing thali forever. So, why not guys. Its a simple equal rights, right?
4. Guys can for once get this 'most prestigious token of love' from their sweethearts ;)
5. This is a remembrance of our mighty indus valley civilization. Guys need to do atleast this to preserve our civilization, right?
6. This is one guy's ornament which is popular in marriages. Ring cannot be classified such (as even unmarried guys wear rings).

aand many more.......

Anai,

This is what i read:

Silver being a good conductor can absorb polar energies from the earth and pass it to the body, which refreshes the whole body system.

Mabbe thats why men too wore it in the olden days... Thou there are no medical proofs...

So am just searching if there are any proven theory supporting "wearing metal(be it any metal) does some good or the other for our health"...

Enuf if theres some proof for even pithallai or sombhu... And apram namma sardarji kitta irunthu padicha lesson onnu irukae... Not that easy, guruji. Burden of proof is yours. You are the one who is trying to be unconventional here. Come up with an evidence that metti does not have any medical reasons AND answer all of my above statements. Then, I need to come up with rebutting evidence :)

Reks is trying to get some evidence (even though its not necessary from our side this early). Lets see how it goes.

I would ask you guys to restrain the mention of thali here. In my opinion females should wear it all the times ;) But, thali is not the topic here, metti is.

point 1... there is absolutely no proof.. ippadi oru matter tamil nadu la therinjuthu... definite aa indha concept vechu oru cinema eduthirupppaangaa....

point 2... agree to the point that it has continued for long... but at the same time it died down long time back... which again makes me feel 4 - 5 generanations munnadai our ancestors might have felt that they do not make any relevance.... so these points dont hold good....

3. Hey, ladies are wearing thali forever. So, why not guys. Its a simple equal rights, right?
4. Guys can for once get this 'most prestigious token of love' from their sweethearts ;)

point 3... just b'coz ladies wear thali, why do u want men to do some similar thing... this is not equal rights session.. this practice makes me think abt what will happen at 2100...

"2 ppl at geetham.net forum at 2100...
some barberian decided that men shud wear metti b'coz women wear thali... i cannot wear metti just for his words... "

I DO NOT WANT TO BE A BARBARIAN.. I DO NOT WANT TO PREACH SOCIAL & MORAL LESSONS (i mean issues that a human decide after 21) TO OUR NEXT GENERATION. LET US PASS THEM VALUBLE SCIENTIFIC LESSONS.. THEY ARE THE PEOPLE TO DECIDE ON HOW TO DEDICATE LOVE TO THEIR WIFE AND HOW TO LEAD THEIR LIFE... AND FOR HEAVEN"S SAKE DONT ASSUME THAT THEY WILL NOT BE AS SMART AS US...

I disagree. What is so different from then and now with respect to the toe ring? Moreover, we have all the kavasams in shoes and socks. You will be amazed to find out that this toe ring is one practice, which is followed in so many cultures (even Hawaii). If its not that good, not these many cultures would have followed this. Isn't it? So, please dont assume things without giving solid evidence against the contrary :)

reg metti even in marriages... It is not the current generation that has killed the metti thing.. our elders have done that... i have been to lot of marriages.. to be very frank I have not seen males wearing metti.. (i am not just telling abt our generation)... I guess more ppl from the forum shud tell this... coz.. I will stick to what I told and U will stick to the same side..
