I guess, it should have been "a quarter inch taller while sleeping or lying down". Since all the joints in our body are made to have cushion-like features, when we are erect these joints are compressed due to the weight of our own body. And these relaxed/released when we are lying down. This is the reason for the difference in height.

Actually, I guess, it is a Saudi Arabian law... I will verify and let you knwo the details.

Some more interesting trivia:

1. The most abundant metal in the Earth's crust is aluminum.

2. The Chinese were using aluminum to make things as early as 300 AD Western civilization didn't rediscover aluminum until 1827.

3. Ten per cent of the salt mined in the world each year is used to de-ice the roads in America.

4. An ounce of gold can be stretched into a wire 50 miles long. A lump of pure gold the size of a matchbox can be flattened into a sheet the size of a tennis court.

5. 99% of the pumpkins sold in the US end up as jack-o-lanterns

6. Almonds are the oldest, most widely cultivated and extensively used nuts in the world.

7. Ginger has been clinically demonstrated to work twice as well as Dramamine for fighting motion sickness, with no side effects.

8. Nutmeg is extremely poisonous if injected intravenously.

9. One ragweed plant can release as many as one billion grains of pollen. (Pity those poor people, like me, with allergies).

More fodder for thought:

1. The US federal income tax was first enacted in 1862 to support the Union's Civil War effort. It was eliminated in 1872, revived in 1894 then declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court the following year. In 1913, the 16th Amendment to the Constitution made the income tax a permanent fixture in the US tax system.

2. Canada declared national beauty contests canceled as of 1992, claiming they were degrading to women.

3. Martha Washington in the only woman whose portrait has ever appeared on a US currency note. Her portrait was on the face of the $1 silver certificate issues of 1886 and 1891, and on the back of the $1 silver certificate of 1896. Sacagewea and Susan B. Anthony are the only women represented on a US coin. Both were honored on a dollar coin.

4. Napoleon took 14,000 French decrees and simplified them into a unified set of 7 laws. This was the first time in modern history that a nation's laws applied equally to all citizens. Napoleon's 7 laws are so impressive that by 1960 more than 70 governments had patterned their own laws after them or used them verbatim.

5. The "Spruce Goose" flew on November 2, 1947, for one mile, at a maximum altitude of 70 feet. Built by Howard Hughes, it is the largest aircraft ever built, the 140-ton eight-engine seaplane, made of birch, has a wingspan of 320 feet. It was built as a prototype troop transport. Rejected by the Pentagon, Hughes put the plane into storage, never to be flown again.

Guess, enough for now.
