how can this happen? the cellphone adapter (in US) converts the 110V power supply to DC power of 10V or something and the current is also less.... also, if such a safety hazard been there, the cell phone companies wud hv been sued for non disclosure of harmfulness in US courts.... i really wonder whether the youth was electrocuted at all.... if he was electrocuted, it shud have been from the direct power source....not the mobile phone....gimme a break!!!!!!!!

This did not occur in the US, It is in Kollam (i think in Kerala). Look at this scenario.......

If u have a sudden spike in the powerlines (whicjh is common in India) then this will lead to a breakdown of the adaptor circuits and hence a huge surge of current will flow through the cable connecting it to the ph and hence a meltdown of the cell ph circuits. Then if the cell ph body has any little metal, or ur hands are wet, then right into ur body....

Very sad that this youth was an unfortunate victim of such an incident...

well, i have seen the spike you mentioned in power supply only once in india, when the voltage was showing nearly 300-340V..... according to your post, power surges in india should lead to massive death counts and a macabre of a disaster ..... you have loads and loads of electrical appliances which ppl are in contact with when such surges occur.... im no electrical guy....so forgive my lack of knowledge, if u find any in this post

and i did read the location of the original post....i assumed most of the ppl in this forum are in US than in india ....

    Mobile phone ‘kills’ youth
    Wednesday August 11 2004 09:47 IST
KOLLAM: A youth was electrocuted while using the mobile phone at Chavara on Monday.

He was identified as K. Viswajith, 31, s/o Dr Krishnakumar of Parabrahmam hospital, Oachira. Viswajith, an MBA holder, was working as the sales manager of a private insurance company in Kollam. He is survived by wife Rejitha and a son.

Viswajith was electrocuted when he attended a call on the mobile phone that was put for charging. The body was cremated after conducting the post-mortem. Chavara police have registered a case.

yes a sorry accident chances of such an happening
    though is very less )

Lawsuits against phone companies are quite common
    with these bizarre incidents
and took a spike last year with the radiation effects of the mobile phones
    on the human system.

last year, I happenned to see a case where a woman died in missouri
during a thunderstorm while using her mobile phone which was plugged
to the charger. so that wud explain the electronics part of such an
    happenning does exist.

better to be on the safer side !
thanks for the article cs ! a sure eye opener for many !
