Yes, yes, I know this has probably been answered a trillion times, but I cannot for the life of me seem to get Tamil fonts come out right in Firefox!!! Check my homepage out:

It gets annoying reading articles that have 'ே' in the wrong place all the time!! If some kind soul could help me out...

This is quite well known. I don't know whether there is a solution.

I know. It sucks opening IE everytime I read a good article - Karki's, for instance.

Nope . It works great for me in Firefox. The issue is with the unicode fonts you are using. I have tried a few fonts and Im not sure which font takes care of this. Will post the right one shortly.

Silix, thanks a bunch man! After installing the fonts, is there anything else I should do? Should I change any options in Firefox?

    No cooli,
I think that should take care of the rest with "UTF8 Unicode" chosen as the encoding.

Nopes, ain't working :-(. I installed the fonts you gave, restarted firefox, restarted my system, and am using UTF8 Unicode (tried nearly every other encoding too), and still I get that crappy stuff.

    DAMN!

    Thanks for your help though.

    Coolian,

If you had previously installed any other tamil unicode font you must clear them. For example, if you had Latha (or something similar), you should delete those fonts..

    Check it out..

Nopes Vasan, did that too. I deleted every Tamil font I could lay my eyes on until Tamil characters were replaced by '?' all over the place. Then I reinstalled the fonts Silix posted, one by one, and tested each out. And I still have the same prob. I'm going to throw my laptop against the wall in a bit. Maybe it'll work then.

Can someone tell me the best font settings (or any good settings you found comfortable) , for the Fonts and Colors settings in Firefox. Right now I have set Tab_Elango Barathi as the font for Serif and Sans Serif. I am able to see the Tamizh letters, but got to strain a little bit and read (way too small).

Are you getting proper tamil? Or something like what's happening on both my new and old laptops?

yeah I do get proper Tamil. Here are some screenshots:

    This one's from Geetham -->

This one's from the same text copy-pasted in Jaffnalibrary's Unicode page -->

This is decent enough, but it actually looked a lot better in my old system, not able to replicate the same level of readability here.

This is a Win 2K box by the way.

This is what I did in this system:

1.Downloaded those Tab Maduram and Elango Barathi, moved it to fonts folder.
    2. In Firefox: Language settings: added Tamil as one of the languages, Character encoding: UTF-8.
    3. Fonts and Colors: just changed Serif and Sans Serif fonts to Tab Elango Barathi.

That's the settings I have for the screenshots above.

Seri, I'll try it out in a bit - should be very straightforward, so hopefully nothing screws up...

Was just checking, if Indic fonts have been installed with the Win 2k package. It has not, so the above method seems to be working even without that.

Indic fonts are OS level support for Asian fonts in Win 2k.
