    Default Aaru - Review

Straight from the bat, Aaru is heart-breakingly disappointing. It is nowhere in the league of Surya’s earlier films like Kaakha Kaakha, Pitamagan, Aayutha Ezhuthu and the recent Ghajini. But what we can’t understand is why Surya accepted this mindless film which is full of blood and gore?

The writer-director Hari lays it thick-sadism and violence with no human sentiments worked out - unlike his earlier film. This time, Hari’s film is set in Chennai’s mean street and talks about the politician- goonda nexus that flourishes in its underbelly. The fatal flaw is the script or the lack of it. If Hari’s story and screenplay has been better fleshed out, maybe one would sympathize with Aarumugham the central character.

Aarumugham (Surya) an orphan better known as Aaru is a street smart goonda with a heart of gold. He can make or break political meetings using his muscle and organizational capabilities by getting people hired from the Saidapet slum in Chennai where he lives. Aaru who is brought up since childhood by Viswanathan (Asish Vidyarthi), a gangster and political kingmaker uses him like a pawn to settle scores with Reddy (Telugu villain Jaiprakash Reddy) and others.

One day Viswanathan asks Aaru to arrange a political protest against the resignation of a minister by creating a suicide bid. Aaru arranges five of his close aides for the suicide drama, but Viswanathan masterminds to set them on fire and they actually end up dead! And when it finally dawns on Aaru that it was his boss who was responsible for the killing, he goes on a revenge spree on Viswanathan and his family.

Meanwhile there is a girl Maha (Trisha) a college student and sales girl who falls in love with Aaru seeing his muscle power and good heart! Every scene in Aaru is predictable with no twist or surprise for the viewer. Close-ups of villains hands being chopped off, a guy slashed with aruvaal like chopping vegetables, people being burnt alive- all makes your stomach churn. Thank God, the censors gave the film an “A” certificate!

Your heart goes out to Surya who is certainly above the film. Some unsolicited advice to the young actor- Please do not do such crass mass masala movies, which go against your sophisticated image that you have cultivated after being Anbuchelvam and Sanjay Ramasamy, the heartthrob of millions! A pale looking Trisha’s role has been poorly etched out and she seems to be disinterested in the proceedings.

The ham brigade of Asish Vidyarthi, Jaiprakash and Kalabhavan Mani is at their best while Vadivelu thinks that getting beaten up is comedy!!! Devi Sri Prasad’s music is a big let down as there is no hummable song especially the one shot in Jordan turning out to be a damp squib.

Unfortunately Aaru offers neither insight nor content-just unmitigated violence. In sum this prolonged (2 hours 45 min) film is difficult to bear.

    Verdict: Disappointing

    Hi Guys

I am just back for seeing Aaru here in US after having some tough time with snow
to get to the theatre. Well the first thing I have
to say is it is defenitely worth watching atleast once!!!. It is a
commericial mass masala movie and you cannot expect wonders from it.
It is a predictable story with good action and acting by Surya and
Trisha. On the positive side asusual it is our hero SURYA and his
acting talent's. On the negative side fights are many and they could
have been reduced. Music is OK and you can hear the songs and enjoy
them for while.Comedy was a bit let down but that is what vadivelu
does nowadays in all his movies. Anyways it was a good movie as a
whole package and I am not sure why site like sify had given that kind
of review. Every movie cannot be Kakka Kakka and Ghajini and it is a
commerical masala movie. I wonder why they dont complain like this
when other mediocre films get better rating than this and very unhappy
and disgusted with those sites. You can watch this movie

    Chennai Box-Office (Dec 09-11)

    Tuesday, 13 December , 2005, 11:16

Suriya's Aaru has taken a fantastic opening and is at the first position with 95 percent from five city theatres. In spite of heavy rains, the film looks like a safe bet as it was sold to distributors at a reasonable price.

Thavamnai Thavamirunthu is steady at number two position attracting family audience while Kanda Naal Muthal is at third place. A Hindi film from Mahesh Bhatt on pornography Kalyugis at fourth position is attracting the masses while Harry Potter remains steady at fifth place.

Film Cast Pluses Minuses Trade fact

Aaru Suriya, Trisha, Asish Vidyarthi, Vadivelu Suriya Violent theme, nothing new in story or presentation Has taken a fantastic opening with 95 percent collections.

Thavamai Thavamirunthu Cheran, Padmapriya, Raj Kiran Realism in story narration Too lengthy and slow Above average.

Kanda Naal Mudhal Prasanna, Laila, Karthik The youth theme, songs and presentation A predictable story and climax A hit.

Kalyug Deepal Shah, Smily Suri, Emraan Hashmi Fairly interesting narration The subject is dark A good opening

Harry Potter and the Goblets of Fire Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson The best in Potter series, Awesome special effects and is racy Nothing really, a bit too dark for kids Blockbuster opening worldwide including Chennai

    Suriya's noble gesture
    IndiaGlitz [Tuesday, December 13, 2005]

Actor Suriya called on Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa at the Secretariat in Chennai and gave a sum of Rs five lakh for the Chief Minister's Relief Fund towards the flood relief in the State.

On his gesture, the actor, said,'it is my small attempt to share the burdens and sufferings of my fellow men'.

It may be recalled that Chief Minister presided over the wedding of Suriya's sister Brindha last month .

Suriya is also happy for his recent release Aaru has opened in a big way through out the State.

Though the movie carry mixed reviews, it has been running to packed houses much to the delight of the distributors and the producer.

If you are longing for a headache and want to kill 150 minutes, you may see this totally uninvolving 'mass' movie. This is one step worser than 'Arul'

one more question? What is the full size SUV in India from Ford? If anyone sees this, note that car Ashish Vidhyarthi comes when first meets that Reddy character.

This is a bad movie.....no because of lack of a story or the unbelievably brute violence.....
But more because of the vulgarity in the director's mind.....nothing in this movie is decent, nothing you could accept as part of a decent society......vulgar jokes that were really funny when you were 14 are liberally sprinkled in the movie, dunno why....maybe the director forgot to grow up after that.......and you get to here crass Hindi swear words too, in full, wonder what the censors were doing........

I watched 'Aaru' - only last night...and well yes there's no story....it's a complete masala movie....lots of violence....with an unrealistic climax....the villans were rubbish...and the songs were not so brilliant (except for "Paakaathe..paakaathe..." which in my opinion was really good)....hence overall....I really liked 'Aaru' Seriously, I'm not kidding....I liked this movie (I don't know why - maybe cos' of Surya ), but the movie like Suryalover said is surely worth watching at least the once! :D

    My verdict:
