I do a rice and lentil casserole similar to kichidi, but I stick in the oven.

wash rice, wash lentils, chop onion and half a red chilly, and a cup of chopped spinach leaves or green string beans
put the lot in a baking dish, add 3-4 cups of water(as needed) season with basil , salt and pepper
bake for 20-30 min (150-170C) and you have a similar really low fat version

For that matter, why not a solar cooker..

    my rice doesn't "pongu"

and most of the time I prefer to use pearl barley rather than rice- I like the texture of barley grains

I just got that recipe from a blog, and oven is always more attractive than the stove- considering I burn water on the stove

Its alright, hon.. Don't cry.. hush.. hush.. chellam.. kannu illa.. azhatheymaa..

Nothing wrong with cooking that way, Missie.. Most of so-called recipes are different from each other in such "details" and more or less taste the same way.. When I first read the recipe, I thought of it as vegetarian version of -"jambalaya"..
