For those who are interested in learning Java for network programing or application development the best would be to learn Core JAVA and start to learn using the doucmentation available at sun.java.com (http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/docs/api/) .
Atleast I cannot work without this documentation, because i feel difficult to remember that large number of class and methods. And as time goes on you will start remembering few of those you require or use the most.

Java days coming back...For the curriculum project we chose networking java and
cold fusion and we ended up winning the Best project Award and Java also made me win a PC in a programming contest, Good old Java memories...
IDE are powerful and productive with Java, as srigan says Netbeans & Ant are fine productive tools. It saves you lot of time.
Deitel, Thinking in Java, Networking in Java are good books to start with.
Best of Luck to all those who are gonna learn it.
